An example of a correction

Illustrative example, written for this page. It is not a student's conversation or a call to the live tutor.

Illustrative conversation

“f(x) = 2x² − 3, so f(−2) = 2 × (−2)² − 3 = 2 × (−4) − 3 = −11.”

The square comes before the multiplication by 2: (−2)² = 4, not −4. A negative number squared is positive.

f(−2) = 2 × 4 − 3 = 5

What value do you get for f(−3) with the same care?

The correction names the step that flipped the sign, shows the right working and hands back a question to check on another value.

Research: in a review of ten study techniques, practice testing was rated high utility and rereading low (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013). The mock exam in the exam’s format is a test, and NodeStudy has not measured whether it has that effect.

Tests you can send practice material for

The tutor works from the material you send. The list gives examples of each kind, not a catalogue.

  • SAT. the Math section and the Reading and Writing section
  • PSAT. PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10 and PSAT 8/9
  • Other tests. the ACT, AP and the English tests are on international exams

How NodeStudy fits your preparation

Send the practice tests and worked solutions you already have. The tutor answers from them and shows what it relied on: a citation opens the page of the file.

Set your exam date and the time you have each day. Sessions land on the calendar before the date, none longer than two hours unless you ask, and the plan is redone when your routine changes.

Sit mock exams in the format of your exam. The tutor copies the style of a past exam in your material, or asks the format when there is none. You answer one question at a time against the clock, and the correction comes after you hand it in.

When the question allows, the tutor checks the arithmetic with a symbolic algebra tool. What that check covers is on How it works.
