An example of a correction
Illustrative example, written for this page. It is not a student's conversation or a call to the live tutor.
Illustrative conversation
“I drove from A to B at 60 km/h and came back at 40 km/h. My average speed is (60 + 40) ÷ 2 = 50 km/h.”
The simple average of two speeds only works when the time spent at each speed is the same. Here the distance is the same on both legs, so you spend more time at the lower speed.
240 ÷ (120/60 + 120/40) = 240 ÷ 5 = 48 km/h
Take 120 km each way: the trip out takes 2 h, the trip back takes 3 h, and that is 240 km in 5 h. What average speed do you get if the way back is at 30 km/h?
The correction says why the simple average fails, shows the total distance over the total time and hands back a question to try with other speeds.
Research: in a review of ten study techniques, practice testing was rated high utility and rereading low (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013). The mock exam in the exam’s format is a test, and NodeStudy has not measured whether it has that effect.
International exams you can send practice material for
The tutor works from the material you send. The list gives examples of each kind, not a catalogue.
- US admission. the ACT and AP (Advanced Placement); the SAT and the PSAT have a page of their own
- Graduate and business school. the GRE and the GMAT
- English proficiency. TOEFL and IELTS, for reading and writing only; listening and speaking are left out
- International secondary school. the IB (International Baccalaureate), A-levels, GCSE and IGCSE
How NodeStudy fits your preparation
Send the practice tests, prep books and worked solutions you already have. The tutor answers from them and shows what it relied on: a citation opens the page of the file.
Set your exam date and the time you have each day. Sessions land on the calendar before the date, none longer than two hours unless you ask, and the plan is redone when your routine changes.
Sit mock exams in the format of your exam. The tutor copies the style of a past exam in your material, or asks the format when there is none. You answer one question at a time against the clock, and the correction comes after you hand it in.
The tutor builds flashcards from what you studied, and the review comes back on a spaced schedule.
When the question allows, the tutor checks the arithmetic with a symbolic algebra tool. What that check covers is on How it works.
